CHAPTER SIXTEEN

One year later

SHE WAS DEFINITELY better prepared for the chill this time. On this visit, she’d made sure to pack a solid, warm winter coat. Good thing, too; this year appeared to be much colder than last.

Izzy clasped Zayn’s gloved hand as they walked through the square to get to the Eiffel Tower. He’d promised her he’d bring her back and he’d been true to his word.

Several moments later, when they reached the top, it had already grown dark. Slowly, gradually, lights began to come on throughout the city. They stood staring at the majestic skyline, her back to Zayn’s front. Below them, Paris’s lights sparkled like millions of brilliant diamonds against a dark velvet backdrop. Adding to the view, the slew of Christmas decorations all around the city and dotting the banks of the Seine.

She felt a tremble of pleasure move through her body. How had she become so lucky? She had a career she loved, lived in a gorgeous part of the world and had the love of a man she’d more than once thought was lost to her forever.

“Cold?” he asked beneath her ear from behind, misinterpreting her shiver of delight.

She didn’t correct his assumption. “A little.”

“I’ll have to try to fix that,” he said playfully and nestled closer against her. His hot breath sent trickles of pleasure over her skin.

Their trip to France this year was so much more relaxing. None of the pressures that had existed last year had followed them this time.

Zayn had made a visit to his father just before their flight. The man was still quite ill but his condition was considered to be stable for now. Izzy knew it hadn’t been easy for him, but Zayn was making a true effort to forgive and understand his father’s mistakes. He made her so proud.

Now they were in Paris strictly for pleasure. No expo. No awards ceremony. No angst. Just the two of them enjoying each other’s company.

Izzy released a contented sigh and nestled further into Zayn’s warmth. His arms tightened around her midsection.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything more beautiful,” she whispered, taking in the majestic scene below. She found herself wishing she was an artist who could somehow capture the visual on canvas, preserve it for all time. Not that it would ever leave her memory.

“I have,” Zayn said pointedly, studying her profile. The way he was looking at her sent a surge of pleasure through Izzy’s core. She’d been in love with him since she was a young girl, had somehow grown to love him even more since Fate had thrown them together again last December. She decided Fate had done pretty well by her for this lifetime.

“I’m hoping you’ll think this is beautiful, too,” Zayn said, gently turning her around to face him. In a movement that sent shock waves through her center, he pulled a small velvet box out of his pocket and knelt on his knee.

Izzy thought she’d forgotten how to breathe. Doubted she may ever remember again.
